The number of categories I use for my posts will grow over time, and not all of them will have titles that are completely self-explanatory. In the interest of clarity, here’s the rundown on the different categories:
Admin: Pages about the blog itself. Expect these to be short and infrequent.
Album Reviews: As it says. Often, but not always, this will include a track-by-track breakdown.
Book Reviews: Reviews of books I’ve recently read, and favorite books of mine that I strongly recommend reading. Because of my own preferences, these will tend to be science fiction and fantasy novels, with the occasional classic thrown in.
Christmas Cinema: Reviews of Christmas movies and the occasional non-Christmas movie that’s set at Christmas (e.g., Die Hard or Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), as long as they were reviewed during the Christmas season. Separated out from other reviews so that they can be quickly found by interested readers each year.
Devil’s Advocate: In which I court controversy by taking a position I know to be unpopular… and try to convince you it’s right, or at least to consider it.
Favorite Films: Some of my favorite films, and movies that I think just about anybody should watch. You can assume most of these get a 5-star rating from me.
Halloween Haunters: Every October, I try to find some good scary movies. Mostly they wind up being neither good nor scary, but I try nevertheless. Any horror film or monster movie (whether it’s meant to be scary or not) that I review during the Halloween season is listed in this category. Other Halloween media (i.e., books and albums) are under their respective review categories, but will generally be tagged with “Halloween”.
Media News: This is news that I felt warranted sharing, about movies, TV, or any of the rest of the blog’s topics. I’ll usually be doing some editorializing on it as well.
Monday Music Video: Each week, a music video and short discussion.
The Morbid Curiosity Files: Because sometimes I find myself checking out a movie to see just how bad it can be. Since I know it’s not entirely fair — if I’m expecting it to be bad, I’m likelier to spot flaws — I can at least be honest by acknowledging when I’m viewing such a film. Doesn’t mean they’re all bad, and it certainly doesn’t mean that movies outside this category are all good. It’s just that these are the movies I expected to be bad from the beginning, and am watching for precisely that reason.
Movie Reviews: Reviews of movies, except those categorized elsewhere. This includes both new movies and old, with the key aspect being that it’s something I’ve watched recently. Either way, it’s a “new to me” review.
Ramblings and Musings: Essays that don’t really belong in any other category. These are more likely to be thoughts on general topics rather than any specific work, and there’s a very big chance that I’m just writing off the cuff here.
Science Fictional: Taking science fiction and fantasy plot points and examining them with something vaguely resembling science and logic — at least as much as is allowed within the terms of the story’s universe.
Tech Reviews: Reviews of software and other technology, generally related to movie viewing.
Television Talk: Discussion of TV series; usually looking back at a concluded season or series, or at the debut of a new series.
Top X: Assorted lists, sometimes sorted.
Version vs. Version: In this category, I pit two different versions of a work head-to-head, see what’s the same, what’s different, and which is better. It could be remakes of a film, or a film adaptation of a book, or a TV series spun off from a film, or anything where a franchise has more than one incarnation in the media.
