Coming in a bit late today, but still technically Friday morning, at least in my time zone, it’s this week’s dose of News Bites. As always there’s a fair amount of superhero movie news and speculation, and some odd film and TV adaptations. There’s news on Martin Scorcese’s next project, and Luc Besson’s as well. So read on for what’s going on. Continue reading

News Bites: Heroes and Heat
Good morning, folks. Another outage on my internet connection left me unable to post or read for a few days (I’d like to exchange 2013 for a better year, please), but it’s working again in time for this week’s News Bites. Now, given that I missed a few days of browsing the web, it’s certainly possible I missed some interesting news. But what I did find is certainly interesting in its own right. A few more roles being cast for films, yet another remake, a TV series name change, and a rumor debunked while another is seemingly (if unofficially) confirmed. So read on for this week’s news! Continue reading
News Bites: Turtles and Transformers
This week’s assortment of news bites largely consists of superhero movie news and other adaptations. There are a few denials of things, a few rumors, and a few confirmations. There’s also a distressing amount of Michael Bay news. Such is life.
Read on to find out what’s going on. Continue reading
News Bites: Minions and Mutants
Another week with a lot of news, especially on the television front once again. A lot of this just came in yesterday and this morning, so it can be considered “hot off the presses” if there were a printing press actually involved here. A lot of this week’s news is science-fiction related, and of course, there are the usual updates on comic book superheroes coming to the big screen — as well as a superhero of a different stripe coming to the small screen. I’ll be out most of the day, so it may take me a bit to respond to comments, but there’s a lot to discuss, so read on! Continue reading
News Bites: Star Lords and Wars
It’s Friday morning, time for the weekly dose of news bites. So for those of you seeing this on the front page instead of a direct link, hit the “Continue Reading” link to see what’s new this week. What’s on the docket? Some big time movie plans, and a whole lot of upcoming TV series. Continue reading
News Bites: Jedi and Other Knights
It’s Friday morning, time for your weekly tidbits of the news. This week there hasn’t been a lot of solid news, but the rumor mill is in full swing with some mighty big possibilities. If any of the rumors are true, there’s apt to be some serious divides among fan-bases as they try to sort out how they feel about some of this.
Paramount Pictures and J.J. Abrams are planning to adapt Juliet Macur’s upcoming book Cycle of Lies, about Lance Armstrong’s doping scandal. No release date is mentioned, though with typical production times, it’ll probably be out in about two years, which will be about two years after the last person stops caring.
Speaking of Abrams, he may be directing a major science-fiction film set among the stars… and no, I don’t mean Star Trek. According to The Wrap, J.J. Abrams has been selected to direct Star Wars: Episode VII. Which, if true, means all that infighting among sci-fi fans about which franchise is better is about to get a whole lot muddier. (Note, however, that there have been a lot of “confirmed” directors attached already who were debunked within a few days, so until this comes out in the form of an official press release, it may not be a given, especially as Abrams denied wanting to direct the film last November.) EDIT: That press release has now arrived.
Also largely in the “rumor mill” stage, Latino Review cites “sources” as saying the characters have been chosen for Justice League. There will be a core team of five in the film, with the possibility of cameos for other characters. Those five? Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Green Lantern. As these are probably the best known members of the J.L.A., it makes a certain amount of sense.
All six actors to play James Bond in film will be on stage together at the Oscars. This will take place during Adele’s performance of the Skyfall theme song (nominated for Best Original Song). So there will be at least one cool thing about this year’s Academy Awards — actually, two, considering this implies they’re actually going to play the nominees for Best Original Song instead of doing 10-second clips like they have the last few years.
In a move sure to upset absolutely nobody — except perhaps all the fans of the film — the Weinstein Company is moving forward on a sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, based on author Wang Du Lu’s Silver Vase, Iron Knight. The director currently in talks for the film is Ronny Yu, best known in the U.S. for Freddy vs. Jason and Bride of Chucky. This may be the funniest thing I’ve seen all week.
“There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke.”

News Bites: Remakes, Repeats, and Robopocalypse
It’s Friday morning, and though I took the last two Fridays off, that means it’s time once again for a weekly dose of news bites. Before I get into the news, I’d like to mention that I’m now on Letterboxd. I don’t know if it’ll prove useful yet, but it’s at least interesting to see all the posters of the various films I’ve watched. I’ll note that there’s a significant discrepancy between the count it gives and my count of theatrical features I gave a few weeks back; there are a couple reasons for this. The major reason is that Letterboxd also counts short films, TV movies, and direct-to-video movies. But there are also a few cases where a film I’ve seen simply isn’t listed on Letterboxd (such as Sol).
Now on with the news.
The release date for the Carrie remake has been pushed back to October 18, 2013. At least it’ll be seasonal, though there’s still the question of why a remake is necessary.
The film adaptation of Robopocalypse has been indefinitely delayed. Steven Spielberg says the script isn’t ready, and it’s “too important” to rush. Additionally, Spielberg says it is, at present, too expensive to produce. He has since added that he believes he’s found a way to make it “more personal”, and is retooling the script himself. He expects a delay of approximately 6-8 months.
In other Spielbergian news, he is producing Jurassic Park IV, which is scheduled for release on June 13, 2014. The film will be released in 3D, which isn’t surprising considering the spectacle nature of the series.
Repeat Ralph? The stars and director of Wreck-It Ralph are discussing sequel possibilities. Director Rich Moore particularly hopes to be able to actually use Mario the next time around.
Jack’ll be back July 10, 2015. The fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film is going forward, with Jeff Nathanson working on the screenplay. Although the presence of Tower Heist and Speed 2 on his resume isn’t exactly encouraging, he also wrote the screenplay for Catch Me If You Can, which was reasonably well-received, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which was… divisive, but at least in a related genre.
With Man of Steel on the horizon, and the success of Marvel’s The Avengers, there’s been a lot of talk as to whether DC Comics would make a Justice League movie. It’s been known for a while that they’ve been working on it… but now it sounds as if there may be a second one in the works. Guillermo del Toro has confirmed that he is working on a film adaptation of the DC Comics title Justice League Dark, about a group of DC’s magic-themed superheroes working together. The team includes John Constantine (played by Keanu Reeves in a 2005 film), Deadman, Zatanna, and several others who have rotated in and out. While not major characters for the most part, this could be an interesting take on a superhero team movie, and del Toro, if he stays attached, could do well on it. The project is currently titled Dark Universe, presumably to avoid confusion with the main Justice League movie.

Weekly Weblinks: Generals and Generations
It’s the last day of August, the summer movie season is essentially over, and the new releases are gradually shifting over from action-packed blockbusters to dramatic fare and the occasional horror movie, such as The Oogieloves. It’s also Friday, and that means it’s time for the Weekly Weblinks.
There’s a lot of looking back in the blog posts this week, with some reviews of films from earlier this year or last, and some posts that look a few decades back. The news, of course, mostly looks forward, as news is wont to do. There’s quite a bit on the news front, although much of it is in the rumor stage, but what it all has in common is that with very few exceptions, it’s downright bizarre. But if your brain is broken apart by the news, hopefully the blog posts will help you put it back together. So click on through for the Weekly Weblinks! Continue reading

It’s Friday morning, so it’s time for our weekly assortment of blog posts and news links, complete with a shiny new graphic I spent my downtime creating. In fact, this edition of the Weekly Weblinks is just a bit heavier on the news than it has been, and I’m not skimping on the blog posts either. There are a few reviews of new movies, a review of a much-reviled comic book movie, and a review of one of the greatest comedies ever made.
On the news front, there are quite a lot of things to cover, from rumors and news on comic book movie directors, to a surprising film adaptation, a film franchise which is getting rebooted, and — refreshingly — one which isn’t. So read on for the Weekly Weblinks! Continue reading
