José Padilha’s RoboCop reboot is scheduled to come out in 2013, and thanks to ComingSoon.net, we’re finally getting a look at just what Alex Murphy will look like in this new version. An on-the-set picture of Joel Kinnaman in costume has been released, and here it is:
That’s him in the center. I’ll just come out and say it: It looks like they filed the bat symbol off of the Dark Knight’s armor and gave him a motorcycle helmet. It doesn’t look like anything that suggests “RoboCop” to me. My enthusiasm for this project has never been high, and this picture isn’t doing anything to change my mind.
I guess it’s possible they could be CGI-ing the hell out of it later. As is, yeah, it’s not only not very RoboCop-ish, it’s pretty bland. It’s almost bland enough that I can’t really imagine that this IS the final look of the costume, because it would be nearly impossible to market. Saying nothing about the possible quality of the film, that design is just not eye-catching.
It does seem awful bland to be the finished product. On the other hand, if they are CGI-ing the hell out of it, I have doubts that will look all that great… and worse, the idea that this could be just a transitional look suggests the rumored script with the multiple suits including the transforming one could possibly be the real deal.
So he’s now some combination of Batman, Iron Man, and Optimus Prime? Neat! I hope they throw in a dash of unicorn sparkle!
I’m sure they can put that in during post-production.
Is this like RoboCop, Batman style?? Yep, looks like they borrow Bruce Wayne’s suit and filled in the bat symbol. Meh.
Yeah. Normally I hate to accuse one film crew of deliberately aping another, but… this looks so heavily inspired by Nolan’s Batman that it’s impossible for me not to draw the comparison.
This is so lame. Way too generic to be RoboCop.
Agreed. I have a feeling the creators of this film are going to be getting a pretty hefty amount of internet backlash from this.
I’m not liking that suit. I’m wondering if they are placing a dark side to the story.
I didn’t even know they were doing a remake up until 30 secs ago but god I hope they don’t ruin the story
Welcome, lushlili!
I imagine they’re probably going to have a pretty dark take on the story. Everything I’ve heard indicates so, and like you say, the suit kind of implies a dark tone. Granted, RoboCop was always a bit dark anyway…
I’m afraid what little I’ve heard of the story doesn’t bode well. A supposedly-leaked script a few weeks back indicates a progression of suits, including a transforming one, and has him training against Al Qaeda. Hopefully that’s just something somebody faked up to troll the internet, or is a script that was discarded, but I don’t know.
Anyone else find it ironic that he still has his right hand? I guess it doesn’t get shot off like in the original.
Hey Pete! I thought that was strange as well. I remember it being a minor point in the original that one of his hands was still in good shape, but the doctors cut it off anyway because they wanted a completely cybernetic being.
As this is an off-camera shot and the right hand is bare while the other hand is armored, I assume that for the actual shoot he would have a blue or green glove there to be digitally removed in post.
Ah, good thought. That may indeed be the case.
What. The. Fuck. ?
That the fuck. Sadly.
Ehh still not interested in seeing this.
Same here. I wasn’t very interested before, and this has lowered my enthusiasm further.
Terrible 😦
That seems to be the consensus, all right.
But have they written an article on it? 😀

Ha! Nice find.
“It looks like they filed the bat symbol off of the Dark Knight’s armor and gave him a motorcycle helmet. It doesn’t look like anything that suggests “RoboCop” to me. My enthusiasm for this project has never been high, and this picture isn’t doing anything to change my mind”
EXACT. SAME. THOUGHTS.
Great minds think alike. 😀
Indeed 😉
