Weekly Weblinks: Horrors and Hendricks

It’s been a little bit of a hectic week for me, trying to get various things done for the site, so the Weekly Weblinks are running just a tad behind their usual schedule. But it’s still Friday morning, so they’re still technically on time!

I’m just going to cut the intro portion short, and get on with it; it’s all about the posts and news, after all.

It’s a few weeks until October, but if you’re wanting to get into some monster movies early, RR Climber has you covered with a review of the original 1932 edition of The Mummy.

Want a little more horror? Matt at Dinosaur Dracula takes a look at Horror DVD menu screens, evaluating this often-overlooked art.

Will at Silver Emulsion digs up Predator 2. He loved it as a child, hated it as an adult before he started reviewing B-movies, and now he’s taking a look at it again. Go see where he winds up on it.

And let’s keep the blood and gore coming (apparently I’m already shifting into Halloween mode) with Andy’s review of B-movie extraordinaire Piranha.

In somewhat less bloodbathy reviews, Eric of the Warning Sign reviews quirky comedy Sleepwalk With Me, which has a limited theatrical release going on now.

Are we done with Batman? Trick question. We’re never done with Batman. Bubbawheat reviews Tim Burton’s 1989 version, giving it a bit of a look back after the successes of Christopher Nolan’s trilogy.

Sam at Duke & the Movies is still treating us to reviews from the Toronto International Film Festival; here’s his take on Joss Whedon’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.

Cult classic The Boondock Saints may be getting a sequel… again. Despite Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day being even more under-the-radar than the original, a third movie is being discussed, according to star Norman Reedus.

Another actor is trying his hand at directing; Ryan Gosling is moving behind the camera for How to Catch a Monster, for which he is both writer and director. The film stars Christina Hendricks as Billy, a single mother of two whose son discovers a secret road to an underwater town. Max at Impassioned Cinema has the details.

James Gunn has confirmed that he will be directing (and re-writing) Guardians of the Galaxy, about Marvel’s space-faring heroes.

New Line has bought the pitch for Spy Guys, a comedy about a CIA operative who, after being framed and declared an enemy of the state, has to recruit his civilian buddies to help clear his name. The script will be written by Adam Sztykiel, who wrote Due Date, and produced by John Rickard (Horrible Bosses and Hall Pass). The film will be directed Jorma Taccone, director of SNL film MacGruber. Personally, I have mixed feelings about this; the premise has some potential, but the pedigree gives me no small amount of skepticism.
